The other night coming home from the meeting my Tacoma started running very hot while on the SS. I turned the heat on and pulled off and the temp came right down. Got back on the highway and it started creeping back up. I could control it a little by driving 50 and keeping the heat on full. When I got off the parkway it seemed to run cooler. I thought thermostat so i changed that but next time on the parkway same problem.
Someone at work suggested i check the fan clutch but i'm not sure how to tell if it is good or bad.
Any thoughts?

I had a bad clutch on my fan in a 79 cutlass...... they either freeze or completely loosen up. Mine froze, and basically sounded loud as hell. Tell take sign its frozen. Maybe yours isnt engaging? Rev the motor while the hood is up... watch your fingers pls.

assuming it is a mechanical clutch and not electronic clutch. even when cold spin the fan by hand it should not freewheel..it should have some resistance ..now when engine is fully warmed up and running hot fan should be spinning fast and sound strong if its barley spinning when engine is running hot clutch is shot.

I have not spent too much time looking at it because i take the train so it has not been a a priority and its been cold. 
However I did check the clutch and when the car is cold and I spin the fan there is a little drag.
This weekend the plan is to flush the cooling system, since i have not done that since i purchased the car
!
I will disconnect the heater core and reverse flush that with the hose. Disconnect the radiator and see if there is a flow out of hte bottom hose and then drains the radiator and block, fill them both with Prestone flush and water and see if that is the problem.
I'll also see how the fan clutch is working as the engine is heating up!

Just flushed the Cooling fluid and everything is flowing like it should and didn't looks too bad. I'llsee what happens but don't have a good feeling

Well it idled fine fit about 20 min ISO and the temp was fine. Took it out to test on the highway and as soon as I gig on Sunrise highway the temp started to rise! I just ordered a fan clutch and a water pump! I'm pretty sure it's the fan clutch but to cover all the bases I'll replace the water pump too!

Last night instead of going to the meeting I replaced the fan clutch and for good measure the fan, ac and power steering belts. Despite breaking one bolt that adjusts the power steering belt I completed the job in under two hours and it rides as cool as the other side of the pillow!
