My cousin called and found a letter my father wrote, in 1942, to her father asking for advice about enlisting.
She offered to read it to me but I asked her not to, I rather read it in his hand writing.
I guess I kids will only have use Google to find out about our past.

Re: Blast from the past
My Dad worked for Pan Am for thirty something years also. He defected from East germany, got a job with them at Frankfurt airport until he could get a transfer to Idlewild (JFK). When i was a kid i remember him driving to work in his baby blue fastback.
He was still with them when they filed chapter 11 and lost his 30 year pension. I have many memories flying Pan Am around the world. Flying was such a fun luxury back in the day. Silverware, Dinners that would last 2 hours and hot breakfast aboard european flights. When i got older, a pilsner or mimosa while taxi-ing. Free toiletry kits, booze flowing, my mom smoking at the bar. We always sat up front because thats where the empty seats were. When i was younger my dad often took me into the cockpit. All that and my dad worked the ramp.
Thats all gone now and I hate flying for the most part.

Wow Markus. Such a small world. My dad worked at Idlewild (JFK). He was Procurement manager for in-flight service (uniforms, chinaware, etc). I also traveled Gratis and remember how special it was. First class across the pond was an experience!!
My dad bought a '57 beetle from one of the airplane mechanics at PAA. Stayed in the family through many drivers. My dad got out before it went under. Sorry your dad didn't fare so well after so many years.
