Cutting the cord

So I'm thinking about not getting regular cable/satellite for tv in the new place. Has anyone gone with a fire stick/roku and if so, what do you recommend?

We have Rokus and a Firestick. We got the Firestick after my wife saw Kodi at someone's house, but the only time it's used is when my daughters want to watch "Drag Race". I think Kodi is the only way they can find it, not sure on that. We also have an antenna my son's friend made after watching a YouTube video. I connected that to the cable, and disconnected the end that went to the Cox box outside. It works, but is very direction sensitive. We REALLY don't miss cable or even OTA at all. If there's something I want to see on the local news, I hit the website.
There's at least one cord cutting group on FaceBook if you're on there. I'm still in, but I unfollowed it a long time ago. It got repetitive pretty quickly. I'd say to list what you currently watch, what your "must haves" are, what your "have but can do withouts" are and see which stick most closely matches.

I cut it a while ago.
I only kept Cablevision for the internet service (roughly $39/mo) and no longer have a landline phone.
Then I bought a Roku box for each of my three TV's...
Then I subscribed to Sling TV and now get all the same exact channels I had when I had Cablevision. ($40/mo)
I also have Amazon Video and Netflix. ($99/yr and $10.99/mo respectively)
Where I used to spend about $280/mo for cable/internet/phones plus cell phones, Amazon Prime, and Netflix I was hemorrhaging money for TV I didn't watch.
Sling is a great service. The only channel I am missing (and no longer miss) is Antenna TV - which if I was so inclined I could go buy an OTA FM TV antenna for ~$50.
I love streaming - never looked back.

Yeah, I'm looking at firesticks with sling. Ordered one today so I can jailbreak it and get to learn it. I need to make it easy for my Uncle to use. Luckily my Direct contract expires on 6/1, so no penalty. I'll live the last month here without it.

I had the Firestick, (still do - just not hooked up)
I did the jailbreak and put KODI on it - but had this uneasy feeling that KODI/Firestick jailbreaks are the 2018 version of "Limewire". If anyone remembers Limewire, it was a community feed of media sharing and you practically had to accept giving your computer "Computer AIDS" if you wanted to try and download anything.
I went with the Roku's. I have the 4K in the upstairs bedroom with the 4K TV, and the downstairs bedroom and living room each have the Premiere's on them. The Roku remote (and app) are significantly easier to use as well plus they have bigger buttons, and "hot keys" that go directly to the major apps, like Amazon, Netflix, etc.
I know you like your Android products, but I had a much better experience with the Rokus than I did the Firestick.

So I got the Firetv and hooked it up. Not bad. I can get anything I personally would want without subscribing to any service (I'm mostly sports). But I think it might be a bit much for my 81 yr old Uncle. So today I ordered a Roku and I'm going to try it with youtube tv. $40/month for pretty much all the channels he watches, 6 accounts and 3 simultaneous streams. If that works out I'll use Roku's on the other sets except for me.
I'll get the fastest internet from Fios (already with them) and with the youtube tv I should be saving a nice chunk of change. It's like getting a month's mortgage for free. I know it ain't free, but it helps in my mind

Next shop for homeowners insurance and auto insurance some times it's cheaper to combine them some times it's not. But your not going to know to you look into it.

I've been with Travelers for 40 years and they offer a multi-car discount and a multi-policy discount.

Glenn since Sandy a lot of insurance companies don't want to write a home owners policy on Long Island. My cars are insured with the Hartford and the house with state Farm. If I would have combined them with the Hartford my car insurance would have been $250/$300 a year cheaper but my home owners Insurance would have been $800 a year more. The coverage was the same.

So I learned youtube tv will not work with the firestick because Amazon and google are fighting. I ordered a Roku and went to hook that up but the dumb design on my tv won't allow it to fit into the hdmi port. Ordered an extension for that. I like the YT TV so far, clear and easy and should be even better after I upgrade the speed on my interwebs. Lousy day today so maybe I'll put the Roku on another tv and goof with that some.
I figure I'll use the firestick on my garage tv, I only really watch sports anyways.

Cancelled my Direct Tv today. I feel so lost and alone.
Actually I haven't been using it for the past week to see how it goes and I've noticed no difference in what I can/do watch at all. If anything, I'm finding much more interesting things online
