A co-worker is looking to buy an engine for his bug and was looking int he Mid America catalog. I told him i would check on here to see what engine builders have been used and experiences. He's looking at a 1641 i believe.

Thanks

He should not use a kit from Mid America.... the stuff is crap.

He should contact a engine builder and but the parts from them.

What specifically is he reusing?

MaM is GARBAGE.

Avoid it at all costs, he'll spend money buying everything from them and after it arrives with problems he'll double the cost trying to diagnose problems from poor fitment and sloppy build.
He's better off spending a couple bucks more to have someone reputable build the engine, with the confidence it won't have issues and will last more than a season.

I used Anibal Chico from CPR, now SteelBuggin. I believe his link is on our links page too.
