Re: 74 Beetle
Filled the car up and went to GT. When I walked back to the car to leave I could smell gas and there was a puddle under the spare tire well. Found it leaking where the fill hose goes to the tank.
Drove it home, with the trunk unlatched and the fire extinguisher next to me. I siphoned 7 gallons from the tank and cleaned it up. So far it's not leaking. I'll run the tank down and figure it out.
I have another tank if that's the cause.

Re: 74 Beetle
After a few hours all is dry and no smell of gas. I removed the filler and vent hoses. There a rubber gasket that fits between the hose and the tank was broken ad the clamp was loose. Also the breather hose is dried and cracked. So I called Wolfsburg West and ordered new hoses and gaskets. If it still leaks, i have another tank I can swap in.

Got to love it when they start leaking with a freshly filled tank, mine did that too. Cracked vent hose was my cause.

I just love dumping 7 gallons of 93 octane in my Civic that runs great on 87 octane.
I usually fill up in Jersey so I lost $1/gallon on the price difference.

The linkage is very noticeable, or should I say hardly noticeable in comparison to what it looked like before. Nice to see a seamless combination of form and function. That's one car I will forever be envious of.

Re: 74 Beetle
I got my parts from Wolfsburg West today.
The original vent hose was fabric covered like breather hose. The new stuff is exposed rubber with no covering. The original filler hose had a fabric cover and the new is exposed rubber. It's also longer so I had to cut 2" off it. I carefully cut of the old "crimped" clamps and removed the old hose being careful not to break the plastic Tee's... they can be brittle after 40 years.
The new hoses were the correct metric size and slit on the fittings with ease, after spraying some Simple Green as a lubricant. I also replace the small vent hose that runs from the expansion tank to the other side of the gas tank.
All in all the job was easy and the parts fit as they should, even though they are the original appearance.
Tomorrow i'll take it to the gas station and fill the tank to just below full and see if it leaks. Then i'll fill it the reset as a final test. If it does leak, i'll replace the tank... I have another ready to be installed.

Re: 74 Beetle
Finally got around to filling the tank. It has about 9 gallons and so far no leaks. I'll let it be for a day or so and then fill it to the top.

Took advantage of the cool weather and decided to wash and wax the car.
Only took 2 hours and looks like new.

Re: 74 Beetle
so I took the car for a drive. on the way home I had problems getting into 1st. the clutch seemed OK but a fee blocks later it dropped to the floor. luckily I was only a mile from GT so I got it there with no clutch.
I went home to change and grabbed a spare clutch cable. I pulled out the pedal cluster and the hook was fine. I pulled out the cable and it was fine.
"F" the crossshaft must of collapsed. so now I have to put it together and get it home so I can pull the engine.
I'm not happy.

Re: 74 Beetle
It's what pushes the throwout bearing against the pressure plate when you step on the pedal.

Re: 74 Beetle
So I went to GT to put the cluster back together and get the car home. After comparing the old clutch cable to a new one I can see that it did not stretch. I reinstalled the cluster and figured i'd tighten the cable and maybe get one shot at it so I can drive it into the garage. I stepped on the pedal to break off the zip tie I used to hold the cable onto the hook and the pedal dropped to the floor. "F", not I have to take the cluster out and do it again. When I removed it I found this:

The hook twisted off the shaft.
That means I don't have to take the engine out... AWESOME.
I'm really lucky that it snapped before I took the engine out to find nothing wrong.

Lucky for me I have another cluster that I can salvage the shaft from.

Now it's back to GT to put it back together and drive it home.

Re: 74 Beetle
All done and the car is back home.
I took the opportunity to replace the accelerator cable also since it has some wear.
Just need to adjust the clutch, it's a bit too tight.
