About myself and my search for my first VW

Postby nyr208 » Tue Sep 23, 2014 9:35 pm

First time poster long time reader. I am currently in my last semester in college and I am hoping to buy a split window bus sometime after March.

Some hobbies include

Hockey (I play and a Rangers STH)
fishing
surfing
volunteer fire department

Some things I’m looking for in a bus

patinated paint
limited rust
would prefer to have no interior
would like it to be running and stopping

willing to travel to find the right bus

While I don’t know anyone that is a VW expert I have a family friend that restores Chevy nomads and a friend who is a mechanic.

Nice to meet you Steve. They are easy to work on, just can't be scared to get your hands dirty. Hope to meet you at one of the meetings or club events coming up

Welcome Steve.

While I appriciate that you have friends with Chevy's, you'd do well not to let them touch your VW...
THEYRE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT. Usually, when "Chevy guys" start working on VWs, the bus ends up with generic fuel pumps, Holley carbs, MSD ignition and s chronic overheat issue.

What department you with?

Glad you checked in Steve.

Hope the search for your bus is an easy one. People in the group have bought them from out of state to get ones that have less rust issues. There's lots of information and experience from members so keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks nice to meet you too. Defiantly not afraid to get my hands dirty. I've been to numerous of shows where DVG members have attended and plan on attending more the future.

Thank you I think the plan is going to get a bus from out West since most east coast busses (not owned by enthusiast) seem to be rust buckets.

I am going to be seriously looking for a splity once i finish school in December. Any suggestions on what i should keep my eyes out for.

X2 on Chevys being COMPLETELY different animals- and I still bleed hugger orange. I have owned a string of Chevys for about 30 years. Fortunately I learned before I did any damage.

Welcome aboard, way to go with school, and good luck with your search!

A Couple questions

1) 11 window vs Panel

I'm 90% sure I want a 11 window but also love the panel busses with logos. What are the major differences beside looks? More noise, etc?

2) books

I already have and been reading the "how to keep your VW alive for idiots" book. Any other suggestions? I would like to know a little more about mechanics because taking the plunge

3) shows

Are there any shows or gatherings the weekend of the 5-6 or Columbus Day weekend? I should be home from school then.

Thanks

11/13/15 window splits are becoming very popular now. Largely, because they were overlooked for so long as "base" buses while people sought out the SC, DC and 21/23's.
A panel is cool. But, it's a work truck. It has no insulation, interior paneling, no seats.
If your torn between the two, you'd like want a Kombi, go check out Dubstar's photos of his 63 Turkis Kombi. It's a panel, with windows and seats.... "Uh, Mike? Isn't that not a panel?!"
YES! These buses were marketed to work during the week, and the seats go in on the weekend to cart the family away.
Basic, no frills interior with simple gray interior panels.mhus bus is VERY cool IMO.

Muir books is good... The Bentley is better. Muir book caters to the Beetle, while the Type 1 and 2 are mechanically SIMILAR for the generation you're looking for - they're not even close to being the same. Buy the Bentley, it covers everything in surgical exactitude.

And, uh, YEAH. Salem and Transporterfest! Come up! Not sure where you go to school but Tfest is AWESOME. The show is in Brookline, just outside Boston. A bunch of us will cram our buses into an old munitions bunker on a campground in Salem (yes - the witches place) I'm getting up there on Weds. The spare bed is spoken for by my buddy Brian. But, we can find you a tent.
WELL worth the ride up! I've been going to Salem for years, and two years ago some of us were talking about camping before the show... I suggested Salem - since I was already going to be there - and Stan went wil it! Go check out the thread on TheSamba for the show/camp. You'll want to come.

Thanks for the great info

Dubstar's bus is awesome.

Almost finished reading Muirs book and probably will pick up the Bentley book soon.

Sounds awesome. I go to school in Springfield MA. Unforntually I won't be able to make the show in Boston since I have a half marthon that weekend

There's lots of marathons...

Tfest is one of the staples - a not to miss, if you will. You can run in Salem!

Too much metal work ? Consider it east coast patina. That bus has more metal on it than anything Manny has driven in the last 20 years .

Welcome !

Lol I would also prefer a bus that is running or close to running.

If that's the same Manny from theSamba then I really like the CRW bus

That would be him. I've never met Manny in person, I've never seen the CRW bus in person either, and I grew up in Coram. I don't know exactly why, but that bus always makes me smile when I see a photo of it.

Kinda off topic but has anyone been to the classic car museum in oyster bay? they have a 21 window bus on display. hoping to go soon to check everything out with the old man. http://www.collectorcarshowcase.com

Check out vw groups on Facebook. There seems to be a lot of VWs available out in Texas.

Finally made the plung. Just purchased a 66 bus. Hoping to get it shipped here in the next couple of weeks

So far I know I need the following
1. Set of original mirrors ( would prefer elephant ears)
2. Wind shield shafts

If anyone has any leads please let me know

Also plan on registering for the NYC Traffic Jam. Hoping to get in I'm working the overnight tonight and will be trying from my phone.

You need to host them on a site like Photobucket, then paste the code that looks like this:
