Howdy from out west

Postby Markus » Fri Jan 31, 2014 2:31 pm

Queens county to be exact.

I recently joined the Samba and met onoxiousblue on there and he told me about this place. Its awesome that there is an active local ACVW group. I went to a meetup thing in brooklyn in october and only 2 of us showed up.

My name on the samba is Gib_Gas. Some info:

I have a 79 deluxe westy (purchased last september)
Live and work in NYC
Not new to air cooled engines but sorta new to VW's (my father drove us around in a fastback when we were kids)
Am the son of German immigrants who apparently brainwashed me into buying several vw's and bmws
have a small revolving collection of vintage motorcycles

I dont have FB, flicker, twitter, instawhatever, etc. so i cant easily post a picture right now, sorry. I try to stay relatively off the grid.

Looking forward to maybe meeting some of you in the future. My VW is a daily driver at this point and I plan on using it a lot. It aint pretty or anything but its a work in progress. My approach is concentrated 90% on function and 10% on appearances. Thats pretty much my approach in general.

Have a good weekend. happy superbowl.

Glad you found us. You should try to come out to a meeting.

BTW... what's "the Samba"?

Glad you found us Markus!
Queens isn't far! We meet up two times a month, so you should definitely try to catch us. With the a
Ring coming it's a great time to bring the bus for a ride. I'll have the meetings page running soon, but just ear mark the second and fourth Wednesday.
Not sure where exactly you are, but we have a few other ACVW owners "out west" Shawna has a 79 Westy and splits her time between NYC and Greenport, Dan and Jessica (have sadly fallen away from us but) have a nice square, and Sarah, who is in BK I recall correct. She's hardcore and runs her square as a daily, and takes regular trips back to Ohio with it to see her family.
So, no "it's old" excuses. The only old thing here is Glenn!
There's a bunch of great shows over the summer, so check out the events page and hopefully well get you out camping with the bus this summer!
You should be able to upload pics through the site, (if you don't use photobucket, images back etc.) just slide down, and click the "upload attachment" tab. Follow the prompts there, and don't forget to click "add the file".

Thanks for the warm welcome. A few things...

The samba is a mega site. its awesome http://www.thesamba.com/vw/

I live in Maspeth, right on the ridgewood border near Metropolitan ave and Forest Ave.

YES, i will def plan on making it to a meeting, maybe when it warms up a bit. Though I have been driving my westy daily. Even this morning while the entire body was encased in ice.

I do have camping plans in the works. I will start off small like the catskills this summer and work my way up to Wyoming. I'm really into outdooors stuff. I have been motorcycle camping mostly for the last 10 years. I rode my ducati across the country years ago and last year rode a 1976 BMW R90/6 to nova scotia and back. Both those trips were 80% camping.

Cheers, careful on those roads today.
