Site Redesign Has Begun

How can we improve the site?

Is it just me or is the Logon screen hosed up, all I see are x'ed out pics. It could be NorthShore blocking but they never did that before. I'll check when I get home.

Tom, go to the page that you are noticing the issue with please. Post a link back here for me to see.

If you are going to http://www.dasvolks.com then yes, you are correct and it is all X's

The home page will be moving soon (though you will still access it by going to http://www.dasvolks.com)

I have had to move the image file that houses all the images, buttons and style of the new site and some of the file names were duplicates of the old files. So I just deleted the old files so as to save me the confusion...

For now, you can see what will become the home page by going to

home.php
(though the image slider will be changing, a gruppe introduction and the site navigation will be added still.)

You can see these other pages too:
news.php
events.php

There are other pages, but these are the closest to being "operational"

Tom, the issue you were seeing should now be fixed. The old website is completely gone and (while not all the connections are made) the http://www.dasvolks.com should now be forcing to the forum's index.
Soon, that will push to a home page (same concept as previous editions of the site)
You should see a gray navigation bar above with the buttons to other pages within the site.
The pages aren't complete, still have more to do on essentially every page.
Anyone who gets to the site by bookmark will need to update their bookmark as the forum page now exsists at a different address than it had prior.

Please, everyone let me know if these are working or if we need to rearrange things.

Home page navigation is fixed.

Now, when you click "DasVolks Vintage Volkswagen Gruppe" at the top of the page, you will navigate back to the home page. Clicking forum, will refresh and give you the forum index page.

Browser Icon is done! That was a bit confusing... Took a while to figure out how to get it to display but now, if you look at the tab in your browser window you should see the DVG logo!

In worse news... I seem to have lost my avatar...

The contact form is running now.
It has some basic info, what to do and where to look sort of stuff.
At the bottom is a form that will send a PM to any account I choose.
I can change it on the fly from the control panel, and it is tied in to the board's security system to prevent spam entries.
It will recognize if a user's email is registered, and will only prompt for an email address if you are not logged in. If you enter an email address which is registered, but you are not logged in it will prompt the user to log in.

It won't be an app, but now that the whole site is within PHPBB the site will automatically detect if you are accessing from a handheld or tablet. The whole site won't be indexed on the mobile version to save load time. But, all of the forum will be. A "mobile only" forum body listing the yearly events will display only if accessing from a handheld or tablet. You won't see it if viewing in browser mode or on a PC.
The mobile integration should be finished in a day or so.
I'm trying to get each page running, then going back to fill in data and connect the "dots".

Please, cruise around. If there is something you want or something to be fixed or addressed let me know. From function (what works and doesn't work) to style, ease of use, to spelling errors and what looks pleasing or displeasing to the eye.

Mobile optimization is now running.
It is not running as smooth as I had hoped. Some errors may pop up if your computer is set to save cookies. If you have any errors with it please report them. Copy/Paste any errors to this thread, or in a PM to me especially if the error doesn't clear after refreshing your screen.

I'm going to be looking for a few members to help with reviewing some things on the new site.
By the time I am finished with this links page, there will be about 150-200 links. If a few people each take a section (clubs, parts, resources etc) and just clicks each link to make sure it is good, and doesn't return a bad page or a dead link it would make my life ALOT easier right now.
If you have a little while to contribute, drop me a line and I'll give you a section.

Thanks Glenn, appreciate the help.
The site is backing up now. Been working on some stuff for a few hours since I had the day off.
Membership and Meetings pages aren't done yet, they index though because there are empty files on the server.
The show site won't go back up until last. I'm still waiting for Larry to email back about the 2014 show.

I'll pull GEX, if you see other links that are in the wrong category or that we should/shouldn't have please let me know.

I'll make the changes as soon as the site is done backing up.

Take out ReNu power coating... they screwed me and you. Action Powder is the DVG approved vendor ;)

Back up and running...
If anyone notices a list of errors at the very very top of the page, please notify me sooner than later so I can get online and check the error logs.

Membership and Meetings pages are next.

Once those are running I will be running a prune (within the next week).
Both of members (0 post count and not logged on for >1 year) and posts.
Need to clear the database tables of extensions that no longer exist after the rebuild. Don't want to run into the "issue" we had with last year's crash. A smaller board is faster and easier to maintain. Use this warning to find threads you don't want to be lost (project threads will not be touched) and send me a link to it by PM.

Membership page is "running" but, it's glitchy. The style sheet is all sorts of muddled up and it shows when you look at the page. Nothing lines up, or looks right. It only has three fields right now. I'll add/change them once I know what I want them to be. I'm tired, so I'll mess with it more later.

Ok, the membership page is fixed. The application itself is still running but also is still ugly and glitchy.
I have to add in functionality to access the registration screen from the membership page. I didn't think of it until after I uploaded it.
New premium and site sponsor ranks. Both are tied into the app form. When a user decides to upgrade to a paid subscription it brings them through our paypal form, then brings them back here to the application built into dasvolks.com which (after being filled out) sends me a PM indicating they upgraded. Two ranks as of now, really only did two because of an article I read online.

More importantly...

Photo Gallery/Albums.
Do you guys want it? Do we need it? Did you look at or use the old one?
A gallery integrated with PHPBB is tough, I'll try it if we want it. But don't want to waste time if it won't be used.
The old site used a combination of flash and java that looked real clean. It was just not conducive for updating on the fly which worked since no one takes pictures at shows anyway lol

Please, let me know.
Bed now.
