Pull the engine for the first time and put it on an engine stand. Plan to clean it up, adjust the valves and fix the oil leaks

Ordered a new engine from Chico and when i tried to install it i had a lot of problems. Manny came over and saved the day. Before we even talked the engine he helped me replace all 3 tranny mounts and a new coupler. after we tried to install the engine and realized the problem was who ever converted my bus from 6v to 12v never changed the flywheel or starter.

Manny had a 12v flywheel and an bellhousing that was previously carved out which we used as a basis to grind out my transmission. installed a new starter. Manny ran all new wires since my new engine has a generator instead if an alternator. After a lot of test fitting and more grinding we got the engine in without the flywheel grinding.

Yesterday morning I finally got the engine to fire for the first time. i just have to fix an issue with the accelerator cable tomorrow and we should be good to go. Manny was a huge help and i defiantly learned a lot.

She is looking great!

What was the issue with the other motor? If that motor was the correct motor for the bus, I’d suggest you hold onto it. In many cases ( pun intended) you can rebuild it/ have it rebuilt. Also, the tins that came with your ‘new’ motor are prob aftermarket and sometimes can be poor fitting. Look for any gaps once all installed. From above, if you can see the ground below, try to move parts a bit to seal it up. Monitor the engine for excess heat. Easy was to do that is after a long drive, can you touch the dipstick? NO….. your motor is too hot.

Another way to install this would have been to swap the 6V ( 180mm flywheel) over to the new engine. This allows use of the stock starter, same clutch/ pressure plate, and of course, alleviates the need to use a grinder to install a VW engine. I just did this flywheel swap on a someone's 65 bug that need an new engine, where he opted for a larger 1600 single port motor in lieu of the stock 40hp. But if this new engine is super hi- pro, dynamically balanced, test run, etc, all with the 200mm flywheel…. I can see that the argument. I generally prefer to opt for the 'easier to undo' solution but half dozen....

Dual carbs can be tricky, some linkages are a pain and require some fiddling. Watch the oil lines of the full flow in their relationship to the header. There is a thing called the ' claw' in case you dont know or already have,

Keep us posted on the progress of this bus. It’s good to finally see a nice solid split bus on here. Best of luck with it and I hope I can check out in person soon.

Motor was out of a beetle. It needed work and I wanted something with more power. Thanks for the advise I will take a look

I spoke to the engine builder and he gave us both options but convinced us the better route would be to grind out the tranny for my motor.

Thanks for the advise and kind words. Hope to see you at Dubs in the Shrubs

do the splits use 7mm fuel line as well?

so Gates barricade would use 1/4 inch line?

the right tool makes working on these vw's much easier, but then there are those times when you have to improvise!! Def need that side view mirror on a bus. With the cabinet on the rear right of my bus there is a big blind spot. Hope you can make it to the BBD

Drove the bus 80 plus miles today. Went to Suffolk to run some errands, then went to freeport and scored a new rear deluxe bumper.

Then...

Was on my way home and and heard a loud SNAP. Completely lost my clutch pedal. The clutch cable snapped but i was only about 2 blocks from my house. I was lucky enough to have my old man tow me home. I have a spare cable so ill throw it on tomorrow night.

You could've driven it sans pedal. It takes a good ear, and a gentle hand. But, I've done it in that same predicament.

Only takes one time and you buy 2 and keep a spare ...accelerator cable too...they are cheap, a tow isn't
we know that the early bird gets the worm however,
