Does anyone know?

Does anyone know?

Postby NastyPyro on Thu Jan 21, 2010 3:08 am

Where/If:

1) There is a vintage vw parts store where one could actually walk in and purchase parts for my beetle like a Chirco store (http://www.chirco.com), anywhere near nyc?
2) Any self service salvage yards anywhere in NY with vw's

It is just two random queries that I have been trying to answer myself for a while and I finally thought that it doesn't hurt to ask

Thx

There are no "walk in" stores.. they're all gone.

Ethan... good questions. No stores due to the fact that items are bought so inexpensively via mail order/ internet bc they have minimal overhead. Also... these cars dont have enough of a following to keep prices competitive while still putting bread on the table. For parts of all cars, you best bet is to find someone parting one out and go from there. Good luck, and post up what you need. Some guys on here have a pretty decent array of parts.

Makes me realize how lucky I am down here. ALL the yards are self serve, rather few have any ACVW stuff. Last time I drove by, there was one yard that had a beetle up on a rack.
This place is about 4 or 5 miles up the road from me, about 6 or 7 hours from NYC though. http://www.thebughouse.com/

Looking for something in particular?

Ethan, while there are no self serve yards, or walk in parts stores off hand, most auto parts stores can get the mechanical componenets same day if theyre not in stock. By me, Pep Boys, or Roadside usually have tune up parts in stock, while they have gotten parts like voltage regulators, or other odd ball parts to me same day from another store location. So dont completely discount your local chain.

Also, thats whats cool about the club. Its a pretty fraternal group, and usually someone has the part or a parts car laying around. You joined in Nov, post up, lets see what your up against, and maybe one of us already has what you need!

Must local yards won't allow you in there yards for insurance reasons. They also won't keep old VWs in the yard very long because most are probably waisted beyond salvage. If they do get them in good shape they tend to get Barret Jackson syndrom and believe they are worth millions.

Harrys"U"pull it is in PA. There is another in Binghamton but I forgot the name. Either way they are not near by. My experience has also been that they do not keep inventory very well. You have to go there and try your luck. I saw a bus on CL and found out it was sent to the u pull it in Bighamton. I drove up there to pull stuff from it.

The place in Binghamton is Gary's U-Pull but they don't normally have much in the way of air cooled VW's. I remember the split that Glenn was talking about and there was a Westy also but i was there a few weeks ago looking for tires and there were no air cooled VW's.
